In an effort to supporting the fight against corruption in Malawi, the National Integrity System (NIS) Support project run by the Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) and African Institute for Corporate Citizenship has established the National Integrity Platform (NIP) a multi-stakeholder anti-corruption space for identifying issues, analyzing information and advocating on matters relating to national integrity.

MEJN executive directive Dalitso Kubalasa said in a statement that the platform will also provide space for sharing best practices and experiences regarding building a nation of integrity to effectively respond to corruption in Malawi.

Kubalasa said membership to the platform is by invitation or through expression of interest and it is open to individuals, civil society, private and public sectors that have an interest to promote national integrity and participate in the fight against corruption.

“Members of the platform are expected to contribute to the promotion of integrity through sharing of information, skills, and other resources that can help sustain the momentum and focus of the National Strategy for fighting corruption,” said Kubalasa.

Howeve,r Transparency International’s Corruption perception Index, for 2011, shows that corruption in Malawi has continues to rated high. The country was rated the 100th least corrupt country of the 183 countries and territories in the world from position 85 in 2010.

But Kubalasa said the government seems committed to fight corruption as expressed in the National Anti-Corruption Strategy which is presently being implemented through the facilitation of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The NIS which is running until December is being implemented with technical and financial support from Transparency International and UK’s Department for International Development respectively.
