You may call them the Bs if you so wish but the reality is that Big Bullets, Blantyre United and Bvumbwe Research are all out of the K30 Million Carlsberg Cup competition after losing to their opponents in last 32 clashes played Saturday, October 20, 2012.
Bullets, the ‘People’s team’ got the exit after losing 2-1 against minnows Super Eagles at Mzuzu Stadium.
Reports from Mzuzu indicate Eagles were leading the Super League giants 2-0 at half time before veteran Heston Munthali reduced the arrears three minutes into the second half.
All efforts by Bullets and their star striker Gabadinho Mhango to level the scores proved futile and the visitors were dealt a body blow towards the end, when Yamikani Tambala was given marching orders for a second bookable offence.
Civo fans celebrating
According to reports from the northern city of Mzuzu, Bullets’ fans had difficulties to stomach the loss as they attacked Super Eagles followers, prompting police to fire teargas.
At BAT Ground, Blantyre United were disgraced by Karonga Vendors after going down 1-0 to the vendors, who are also through to the last 16.
After weeks of misery, Civo United fans smiled at last as their team defeated struggling Bvumbwe Research 1-0 at Civo Stadium.
New catch Dan Katunga, formerly of Red Lions scored the lone goal 16 minutes into the game.
Coach Alex Masanjala described the win as a timely morale booster, saying the pressure should now be off the shoulders of his charges.
“The boys have been playing under pressure after the string of losses but with this win, confidence should be back in the squad,” said Masanjala.
This was Civo’s first victory in five matches and the team’s fans could not hide their excitement as they sang and beat drums after the game.
