Malawian held for hosting Ethiopian illegal immigrants

Police in Mzuzu arrested yet another Malawian citizen this week for harbouring seven Ethiopian nationals who are suspected to have entered the country illegally.

Mzuzu Police Publicist, Maurice Chapola, confirmed the development, saying they arrested 40 year old Stephano Chipeta on Wednesday alongside the alleged illegal immigrants at his home, Msiki Village, near Dunduzu Road Block after a tip from members of the general public.

What are order of the day are not only cases of illegal entry into Malawi by foreign nationals but also the involvement of several Malawians in either aiding the illegal entry or keeping the immigrants, apparently after getting some money from them.

This is happening against constant calls by Government against the tendency of aiding illegal immigrants into the country.

In the recent development, the Mzuzu Police Publicist said the suspect (Chipeta) was keeping the alleged illegal immigrants in his house and he is said to have confessed that a certain man brought them to his house but promised to take them away some days later.

He said the Malawian accepted the deal considering his high church position and he thought being a devoted Christian, he had no choice other than accommodating them on humanitarian grounds.

Chipeta has since been charged with the offence of harbouring illegal immigrants while the charge of illegal entry has been levelled against the seven foreign nationals. All are expected to appear before the court of law soon.

Stephano Chipeta hails from Kambiro Ngulube Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
