First Merchant Bank (FMB) Mchinji branch on Wednesday treated patients at Mchinji District Hospital pediatric ward to an early Christmas with assorted items worth K200, 000.

According to Mchinji FMB Branch Manager, Dan Datchi said they wanted to do something to their customers and share with the community what they have.

“We don’t believe in only getting from the communities, but rather giving back to the communities we serve. We know the children who are in the pediatric ward some of them are our customers,” said Datchi.

The bank gave out 100 gift hampers to the pediatric ward each pack comprising orange squash, biscuits, Likuni phala, sugar, laundry and bathing soap.

Mchinji District Health Officer, Dr. Chimwemwe Banda was thanked the bank for the timely gifts, saying children at the hospital needed such assistance from well wishers.

“We appreciate the initiative the bank has taken and call upon others to emulate as the festive season approaches. We know children in the hospitals are neglected so an initiative like this is greatly appreciated,” Dr. Banda said.

The bank has also promised to take into consideration the problem of space at the pediatric ward as the team discovered that children were squeezed to one bed just due to limited space.

According to the Nurse -In- charge at the hospital, Moneko Zoto said they have a problem of space at the children’s ward as they are forced to squeeze five kids in one bed.

“We are happy for the early Christmas gift today, but also for the promise they have made to consider doing something regarding shortage of space in children’s ward. It’s really a big problem here,” Zoto said.
