Council orders demolishment of 2-storeyed building in Mzuzu

Mzuzu City Council has ordered the demolishment of a newly constructed two story building located in the city’s central business district because the owners, who are of Asian origin flouted some rules.

Both the city’s boss Richard Hara and the Council director of Planning confirmed the development to Nyasa Times  in separate telephone interviews on Monday.

Hara said the contractor deviated from the approved plans and did not heed calls from the City’s inspectors to follow the approved plans.

“These people have been uncooperative,,” said Hara

Managing Director of Bonya Construction and Labour Consultant Tendayi Jiya, which is doing the demolishing, said the previous contractor and some Asians supervisors connived and used substandard materials.

According to Jiya the MK25 million building is owned by a Mr. Patel of the Quadria Muslim Association who is based in Lilongwe.

On Sunday, part of the building collapsed on its own.

“Its fortunate that it was not a working day but had it been one people could have been killed or injured,” Jiya said.
