People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) president Mark Katsonga has called for the opposition to provide strong checks and balances to President Joyce Banda’s Peoples Party (PP) governance of the country.
He was speaking at Nselema primary school in Machinga when he welcomed about 200 people in who have joined PPM after dumping the ruling PP.
Katsonga said he believed that there was a leadership crisis in the country hence people were dumping PP and appealed to people to align themselves with the PPM as it was the party that would address the many challenges facing the country.
Former PP Machinga North East Secretary Justin Anyezi confirmed that he alongside other colleagues have left the ruling party because of its bad polices.

“PP policies are not pro poor,” said Anyezi.
“We have defected because of the greediness in PP,” said another defector Alice Austin.
Ironically, sources say Katsonga is planning to have an alliance with PP.
But Katsonga said his tiny party PPM will field a presidential candidate in 2014 tripartite elections.
