Chakuamba plays down ‘vagabond’ slurs: ‘I am joining Malawi Congress Party as ordinary member’

Nomadic politician Gwanda Chakuamba has hit back at Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president John Tembo’s refusal to accept him rejoin the party after dissing him that he is a political vagabond.

Chakuamba announced Thursday that he has rejoined MCP, a party he ditched in 2004 following leadership disputes in the party to form the Republican Party

But Tembo said he would not welcome Chakuamba back in the MCP fold, saying he is a vagabond “who will never change.”

However, Chauamba shot back:“I am not a vagabond and I will not be.”

Chakuamba stressed that he was returning to MCP, the party he was led and represented in a presidential elections.

He said: “I am joining MCP as an ordinary member.”

“I am free to join a party of my choice that is MCP,” said Chakuamba.

Chakuamba, who has lost his political clout because of his unstable political stand, claimed he has eased to be a member of his New Republican Party.

Many political observers said, Chakuamba is now a “political spent force” and is reducing himself as a “mercenary”.

He used to command respect in the Lower Shire but now is no longer influential in the area as Sidik Mia, is now the strongman there.
