One person had been confirmed dead while another is in critical condition after a vehicle they were travelling in was hit from behind by an over speeding Scania truck at Lusangazi in Mzuzu on Saturday morning.
Mzuzu Police spokesperson Sergeant Mourice Chapola said the deceased, who is yet to be identified, sustained multiple head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzuzu Central Hospital.
He said the accident happened when a Nissan pick-up registration number BJ 9177 was moving in front of the truck registration number CP 3072/ 3071 belonging to Tikumphire Properties.
“The pick-up with six passengers on board was hit from behind due to over speeding,” he said.

He explained that upon arrival at Lusangazi Dam, the pick-up slowed down after noticing that there was a stationary vehicle in front.
Chapola said the truck driver Gift Soko, 35, of Singini Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo in Mzimba District failed to apply brakes and hit the pick-up.
He further said the pick-up was extensively damaged while the truck had its front part damaged.
The pick-up was being driven by Jeremiah Kalonga of Mwakasoka Village in the area of TA Kilupula in Karonga District.
According to Chapola, Soko who is currently in police custody has been charged with causing death by reckless driving and will appear in court soon to answer the charge.
Police are appealing to all drivers to observe speed limits indicated on road signs to avoid such accidents.
Meanwhile, published reports say aman identified as Ahmed Yasir died on the spot when his Toyota Carina, registration SA 6579, rammed into a bus belonging to National Bus Company, registration BQ 1602, in the early hours of Sunday.
The accident took place at a T-junction to Maula Prison near Lingadzi Inn along Paul Kagame Highway (Chilambula Road).
In Ntcheu, four people were killed and others seriously injured in an accident that involved Trans Rukuru Bus at Ntcheu Boma on Saturday night. Two of the deceased Emily Pemba and Madalitso Phiri died on the spot.
