A primary school teacher at Mgomatchuwa primary school in the northern district of Mzimba, Elick Luhana, 49 has committed suicide after his wife accused him of engaging in extramarital affairs.
Mzimba police spokesperson Sergeant Gift Nyirongo confirmed the death of Luhana, who comes from Eferanji village, T/A Mtwalo in Mzimba.
According to Nyirongo, the teacher on Monday went to school to teach but soon after school assembly, he returned home where he picked up a quarrel with his wife claims of extra-conjugal relations. .
”After a heated quarrel, the wife went away leaving the teacher with a two months old baby. This did not go down well with the teacher who later hanged himself at a nearby bush,” Nyirongo told Nyasa Times.
Postmortem conducted at the scene by medical personnel from the district hospital concluded that the deceased died due to strangulation.
Murder arrests
In a related development, police in the district have arrested four people in connection with the murder of Zacharia Nthala 28 from Chinyonga village, T/A Chindi.
The four are; Felix Nkhata 25, of Chikoya Nkhata village, Paul Gondwe 20 of Chiba village, Peter Lwanja, 53 of Lunda village and Dickens Nyirongo 44 of Lunda village. They all come from T/A Chindi in the district.
Nyirongo said on January 17 this year, the four are suspected to have murdered Nthala who was found dead with his hands tied behind.
The four have since been charged with the offence of murder contrary to section 208 of the penal code. The charge attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
