Malawi President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday surprised Malawi Electoral Commissioners when he dressed them down over mismanagement of K1.6 billion at the pollster. "It is important that independence and accountability go hand in hand," said Mutharika. He said it was imperative that men and women who have final say in a national election should not have “questioned credibility." This is the first time that the President has commented on the issue since auditors raised the issue. The audit report had accused MEC commissioners and staff of pocketing allowances and not undertaking the trips. Maxon Mbendera, chairman of MEC maintained there was no mismanagement of money at MEC as raised by auditors. He said MEC responded to each and every query raised by the auditors and the responses are on MEC website- www.mec.org.mw

Nyamilandu: Appoints sub committees

Former Bullets General Secretary Higger Mkandawire who is also a football analyst has hit at Football Association of Malawi (FAM) over appointment of sub-committees. [caption id="attachment_101312" align="alignright" width="600"]Nyamilandu: Appoints sub committees Nyamilandu: Appoints sub committees[/caption] Mkandawire said most of the members had questionable loyalty to the game of football hence could not help in the development agenda of the association. He said some of the members had never been associated with football and could hardly do it after being appointed. “I think most of the members have no connection with football. They have little if not no knowledge of local football in the country,” Mkandawire told Ufulu Radio sports panel discussion programme. “The appointed members normally watch international football in executive sports clubs which make them to be ignorant of local football standards.” He also claimed that most of the appointed members were re-elected FAM president Walter Nyamilandu cronies. “It’s a fact that it’s a payback time to his friends. There’s nothing football about most of the members appointed in sub-committees,” he said. Nyamilandu’s re-election campaign theme was ‘Harvest Time.’ Some of the members who have been appointed with questionable football connection are golfer Roza Mbilizi and women rights activist Seodi White.

Rev Maulana: Irrigation afrming should be encouraged

Blantyre synod of the CCAP has told government to initiate an irrigation programme on a lager scale as an alternative to the prolonged dry spells that threatens food security. Maulana told the President to think of large scale irrigation instead of relying on unpredictable rains. "We know that this would require huge sums of money. At present, government can engage companies to grow maize on large scale that can feed the nation," said Maulana. On Saturday, President Mutharika led the nation in praying for rains. Some church clerics have been preaching that the continued dry spell in some parts of the country is as a result of sin with others saying God is punishing Malawi over its stance on homosexuality. However, weather experts and international organisations like Oxfarm and Unicef have warned of prolonged dry spells in some parts of the country and devastating floods in other areas. Maulana said the government should now take the Green Belt initiative seriously. Mutharika hailed the synod for being a true partner of government in development. The President said the government and church should always work together for the upliftment of people's lives.

Dzuka Malawi! Miracle money, gays and why we are poor

rumour

Happy 2016, where are we today? In Malawi its raining gays, oops I mean the biggest challenge facing Malawi is what two adults do in their bedrooms, the Church is angry, politicians like Ken Msonda are so agitated that they want to have all gays killed pronto. Suddenly NGOs like Centre for Development of the People (Cedep) are convinced people are out for a genocide on all suspected gays. Suddenly, first two monthinto 2016, we have no problems or challenges, our biggest problem are gays. Hold on, there are two interludes, a Prophet in Area 25 turned into a snake, my cousin heard it from a friend who heard from a friend’s aunt who was passing by Nsungwi and heard from a vendor selling tomatoes who had heard from a bar man at a Kachaso at Kang’oma who eeeish, who heard from……. Suddenly thousands of busy Malawians convinced that Prophet Snakes are worth lynching- stop their money making business and attend to a very important national discourse- rumour mongering. After wasting energy and time, it all turns out that it was just a rumour. But still hold on, we the educated lot on social media have another one, Prophet Sherperd Bushiri has bought the same jet twice. We all go bonkers, praising and believing, criticising and condemning, why does he not help his compatriot’s poor. Bushiri, according to his spin machine heads, has 30 mineral mines, 27 gold (I am waiting to get the location too), a University in South Sudan (get the name please) and he launched a multi-billion dollar foundation which nobody has yet “testified” to have benefitted from. Of course a “miracle bank” and “miracle mobile” is on its way. We perhaps spend too much money believing in miracles, witchdoctors and Satanism, that our national discourse has been reduced to three- sex – in this category there are three- porn sharing, gays and rapists, miracle money-prophets, God fearing mantra and Satanism and finally our trade mark “gossip and rumour mongering.” A whole national radio went to town on a former president claiming he had engaged privately after someone sick twisted an innocent picture- that’s the level of rumour mongering and gossip we are proud of. Then we wonder why we are poor today. Why we have to kneel down (the spiritual part of the country) and ask God for water to water our crops. If this is not enough we will be praying while our hearts full of “kill gays” or “stone Simama hotel” for being Satanist hub. You can’t have a cake and eat it, they say. God gave us enough water, one third of Malawi is water, we lack brains to utilise it. Illovo grows millions of tonnes of sugar not from rain, but from irrigation from Shire River. At national level our discourse is not how best we can utilise our waters, our thinking is let’s kneel down and ask for water from heaven! You want to know why you are in a hungry and poverty stricken society? Ulalo Holdings, that of social media commentator and practical millionaire Joshua Chisa Mbele announced recently of 200 megawatts solar power generation project in Dedza East. That did not even attract a mention by most of the nosiest social media owners, instead we were so obsessed with Bushiri’s jet and the Presidents motor-home. The Sunday school bible I went to says clearly “uzadyathukutalako.” Malawians should stop complaining, stop politics and stop gossip, stop useless debates like gays and start serious national discourse that shapes our thinking into productive citizenry. In Zambia, they passed a new constitution, apart from that, concrete making and poultry businesses has been classified as projects for citizens only not foreigners. That’s progressive national discourse not waiting and singing for money from heaven, that according to Bible does not exist. You work you eat, very simple. Everybody, even lazy people who sit down and gossip on Facebook the whole day complain about the economy of Malawi. The Burundi’s, Tanzanians with their Taifa market or timber in Mzuzu and even a nsima bar at Songwe, Nigerians with motor spares and electricals, Chinese with toothpicks to fake hair styles, Indians buying all produce and selling everything are not complaining. We even proudly post photos eating “nsima” cooked by Chinese. Who is buying from these people? Why is Be Forward in Malawi full time even sponsoring a well known football team, why is a cigarette company sponsoring a team worth MWK500 million in a country where the economy is bad. Why are beer companies running millions of kwacha competitions when people have no money to spend. No, as Thom Chiumia wrote the other day in Loose Cannon column, the problem is with Malawians. There are five industries flourishing Churches and Prophets, Witchdoctors, Beer and Cigarette companies, politicians and foreigners. The Late Bingu wa Mutharika used to say, Malawi is not poor, it’s the people that are poor. Our poverty of mind is very pronounced as you see educated people on Facebook asking you to send their numbers to share pornography or lists of sex philanderers. Our poverty of mind is clear when we spend five weeks debating “gay sex” instead of debating what we can do to replace rain fed agriculture. Malawi politicians are worse, nothing good can come out of them, they are all behaving like the same, they cant inspire national discourse that will teach our children values of hard work, education and innovation. Today in most neighbourhoods, you find men under a tree drinking from morning, gossiping or plotting how to “cashgate.” Others are busy gossiping and spreading rumours on social media, others are politicking. The sad part of rumours and rumour mongering, is after smashing Simama Hotel one day for lost kids who had disappeared into the hotel, the kids were found not anywhere near the Hotel, but at home playing. Without shame we nearly lost an investor who is employing Malawians. 2016 is a new year, lets bring new thinking. Starting with individuals, gays were there in the Bible that’s why God said it was a sin, just like theft, adultery and many more we try to pretend do not happen, but that wont bring food on the table. Go and find a slice of money making venture. For the young generation, there is no miracle money. Read again, we had millionaires like Nalilo Khoromana of Nali Fame, Phekani of Phekani House, Kansawa of Tikumbe Limited, Chinsima of Kudya Hotels, Makhumula of Yanu-yanu, Chend aMkandawire of Hotel Chenda in Mzuzu, we still have Khondowes of Kalikuti fame, the Mlombwas of Country Wide, Leston Mulli of Mulli Brothers, Nopolean Dzombe and his Sugar and agriculture schemes, Jimmy Korreia Mpatsa of Mpatsa Trust, Henry Mussa and his Eagle Insurance, Patrick Mbewe and his Trust Auctioneers and Chilembwe , Gospel Kazako and his media empire Zodiak, and many more Malawians who worked tooth and nail to be where they are today. If you invest money at Church, pub or internet bundles to share gossip and porno, start self-reflection today, you will die a miserable soul while Prophets and beer companies are flying all the way in your sponsored jets…….. Dzuka Malawi!

Mbendera: No hope for biometrics

Pollster Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has cast doubt that the biometrical voter registration set for 2019 would be implemented saying the National Registration Bureau (NRB) seems not to be ready. [caption id="attachment_101285" align="alignright" width="467"]Mbendera: No hope for biometrics Mbendera: No hope for biometrics[/caption] MEC chairman Maxon Mbendera said in an interview on the sidelines of an audience with President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday in Lilongwe that NRB was unlikely to issue out national identity cards in the country by 2019. "We will do the registration as we always do. If the National Registration Bureau, cannot finish their job by 2019, we will go ahead because we cannot postpone elections. We have a date in the Constitution for us to hold elections," said Mbendera. The adoption of biometric voter registration would have made registration of voters simple and drastically cut on costs as Malawians would have used their IDs to be registered in voters roll. This was part of numerous electoral reforms the pollster planned to undertake ahead of the 2019 tripartite elections. Another key electoral reform include the adoption of 50+1 voting presidential system which will allow a presidential candidate declared winner only after amassing over 50 per cent of all votes cast as opposed to the current system of first past the post. In 2014, the presidential poll would have gone in second round in a battle between President Peter Mutharika and opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera as Mutharika amassed 34 percent of the votes cast.

Trial by error

Lawyer and former Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambara SC on Wednesday lost his cool in court and his emotions unfolded after Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mary Kachale objected to his questioning line to fifth witness, Keaton Gani. [caption id="attachment_86355" align="alignright" width="404"]Trial by error Kasambara: Lost his cool[/caption] Kasambala , businessman Pika Manondo and Macdonald Kumwembe are answering attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murders on former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo. During cross examination, Kasambara had wanted to establish a fact that on 13th September 2013 he went to Kamuzu International Airport to welcome former South African president Thabo Mbeki and on 14th September he went to Livingstonia Beach in Salima. Kasambara: In your testimony, you said we went together to Salima on 14 September with Mr Mbeki? Gani: Yes Kasambara: Are you aware that a day before I went to the airport to welcome Mbeki during my tour of duty as Minister if Justice? Gani: Yes Then Kachale stood on raise an onbjection, accusing Kasambara of misleading the witness. "Objection my Lord, the questioning line  is misleading the witness to say two statements," said Kachale. After presiding Judge Michael Ntambo asked Kasambara on his question tactics, he explained that all he wanted was to ask if Gani, his bodyguard when he was minister, was with him at the airport. "Misleading," emphasised Kachale. Kasambara then unleashed his anger : “With due respect Madam please don't let me lose my temper, let the court decide on this one.” Before Ntambo made his determination, Kasambara asked for five minutes adjournment. "Thirty seconds it’s enough," ruled  Ntambo. Mphwiyo’s shooting on 13 September 2013 led to the unravelling of the systematic looting of millions of government money dubbed 'cashgate'. He is on record telling the court that Brown Mpinganjira, a senior government official in the former Joyce Banda administration, warned him that Kasambara and another former ruling People's Party (PP) official Hophmally Makande, had given him "ten days to live" unless he honoured certain government payments. Makande is not on trial for the case but testified that he had nothing to do with government payments. Mpinganjira is yet to testify. Mphwiyo had two bullets hit him in the mandible and another went through his shoulder to his chest. One bullet was removed in a South African hospital but two others - lodged in his spinal column - will remain inside the 39-year-old for the rest of his life.

Future African Leader 2015 award winner, Rose Sakala has asked Government and well wishers to take key responsibility to educate girl child. [caption id="attachment_101368" align="alignright" width="600"]Rose Sakala is a youth leader whose passion for youth empowerment and education has created opportunities for thousands of youth in Malawi Rose Sakala is a youth leader whose passion for youth empowerment and education has created opportunities for thousands of youth in Malawi[/caption] Speaking in Lilongwe, Sakala said educated girls can help improve the country's economy. “The rise in population can be reduced if girls spend much of their time in school and once married they would have a better decision to make on the number of children they want to have. “As of now the country is already complaining about the population rise and if girls are forced into marriages then the population would be tripled by 2020,” explained Sakala. She added that it is her wish to support girls in their education and at the same time empowering them to become what they want in life. Sakala also asked men in the country to take part in looking after the girl child and not force them into early marriages so as to have the great future together. “As of now we want to ask government if possible to remove tax on sanitary pads so that girls can manage to buy and use, so that they cannot fail to attend classes when they are doing menstruation. “We want even those that are staying in the village to be able to buy and even those that have more girls in their homes to support them all since some parents say they cannot afford to buy for all the girls they have in their homes,” she said. She then said it is also her wish to make sure that youths in the country are economically empowered as she has been embarked on a programme to make sure that youths are engaged in entrepreneurships. Sakala said youths should be given loans according to the capacity building, saying that those that are at the university should be given big loan. Speaking earlier, Bishop Joseph Manguluti called upon people in the country to hold hands and support needy children to have a better Malawi. He then encouraged girls to concentrate on education and not rush into marriages to become what they want in future. The Future African Leader Award is a competition for youths between the ages of 16 to 23 and they are supposed to produce a video clip of three minutes on what they have done in the year. A 22 year old Rose Sakala, student at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANER) is an adopted child of Bishop Joseph Manguluti and Family. Sakala is a third year student pursuing Agro-Business. Sakala is also a National Chairperson for Common Wealth Secretariat; she has also embarked on the programme to improve nutrition and empower women and girls economically with Save the Children, girls awareness on education with United Nations (UN) Women and also to empower youths in entrepreneurship skills working with his fellow students at LUANER. She always get inspired by the words of Pastor Chris Oyakilome of Christ Embassy who said to youths “You are a leader and you have to make an impact in your country and the world. You can be born poor, you cannot change your yesterday, but your today and future.”

Malawi’s food security hinges on irrigation

Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza (c) being briefed on the Solar-powered irrigation - pic by Gladys Kamakanda

Whether Malawi needs rain to be food secure is a question that can be food for thought for everyone. [caption id="attachment_94538" align="alignright" width="600"]Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza (c) being briefed on the Solar-powered irrigation - pic by Gladys Kamakanda Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza (c) being briefed on the Solar-powered irrigation - pic by Gladys Kamakanda[/caption] Food demand in Malawi has been increasing steadily because of the increase in population. In addition, droughts cause yield reduction and food shortages. President Peter Mutharika told the nation on the Status of Food in September last year that close to 2 million people had no food to take them to the next growing season. The country is currently failing to meet its food requirements, particularly in cereals. Between 2007 and 2008 Malawi produced more maize made history by exporting maize to other countries. How did the country manage? Was it due to good rainfall or there was something new that happened? On 23rdMay, 2011 during the opening of the 2011/2012 budget meeting in Lilongwe, the late Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika said Greenbelt Irrigation and Water Development was an important policy intervention to sustain food security in Malawi. The late former Malawi leader said when fully implemented, Greenbelt Initiative could change development paradigm of the country. He said this could only be achieved by reducing over-dependence on rain-fed agriculture. “As I have said before Mr. Speaker, Sir, the Green Belt Initiative is intended to cover close to a million hectares of land. We have mobilized resources to kick-start implementation of the Greenbelt Initiative. “To date, we have allocated K2 billion from government budget and a line of credit amounting to $15 million (K4 Billion) has been obtained from the Government of India. In the 2010/2011 financial year, 2,824 hectares of land were developed under irrigation. “Since the programme started, about 43,000 hectares have been developed of which 40,784 hectares are under irrigation, benefiting over 356,728 farming families. Government also rehabilitated smallholder irrigation schemes such as Nkhate in Chikhwawa; Muona in Nsanje; Limphasa in Nkhata Bay and Likangala in Zomba, covering a total of 1,797 hectares,” said late Bingu Mutharika. About 20 percent of Malawi total area is covered by surface water bodies that can be used to grow different crops. Recently, World Vision Malawi (WVM) called on Malawi Government and its residents to use of water from the Shire River saying Malawi does not need rain to be food secure, but water from various sources. WVM National Director Robert Kisyula made the call in Chikwawa district in October when government launched 2015-2016 food distribution exercise that will run from October 2015 to March 2016. Kisyula said it was pathetic to see the country experience hunger almost every year despite having a lot of water in the Shire. “It is high time Malawi started doing things differently in order to alleviate shortage of food. There is a lot of water in the Shire River, but you find there is shortage of food every year, why? “Let me say that people have been saying now and again that Malawi experiences hunger due to insufficient rain. I am of the contrary view because to grow maize or other crops you do not need rain but you need water. “Whether water is brought by tractors, donkeys or people using buckets, it matters less because we need water to grow our crops not rain. So why do we fail to use water from the Shire River,” wondered Kisyula. He said people in Chikwawa need to change their mindset and take advantage of irrigation. Kisyula said World Vision Malawi is ready to work with Malawi Government and other stakeholders in order to build capacity of Malawians so that they can produce their own food for the whole year. Kisyula then blamed the cutting down of trees as a major factor that has changed the climate which in turn is affecting crop yield and causing hunger. While acknowledging that what Kisyula said is true, Bernard Sande, Principal Secretary at the Department of Disaster Management Affairs of the Government of Malawi (DoDMA) said government has plans already in place to ensure that water in the Shire Valley is used for producing food. Sande said Greenbelt Initiative has proved that using water can make the country to produce more food than just waiting for rain-fed agriculture. Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Dr Allan Chiyembekeza said during the official opening of the 12th National Agriculture Fair at Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre in August last year that government was putting in place measures to vigorously promote the Greenbelt Initiative which was active during late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika's era. He said climate change affects the future of agriculture in this country, noting that the last year floods and the dry spells that our country experienced in the last agricultural season is a wakeup call for Malawi to double efforts to manage effects of climate change. “In order to deal with challenges related to overreliance on rain-fed agricultural production system, government has taken measures to revive the Greenbelt Initiative which aims at intensifying irrigation farming in different localities along Lake Malawi and other perennial rivers. “The initiative will ensure that we get good crop harvest under irrigation and the possibility of getting two or more harvests in a year because our dream is to make Malawi a food basket for Africa,” he said. He urged all players in the agriculture sector to be innovative and consider adapting to the changing environment by using modern technologies. But despite government emphasizing promotion of irrigation farming through the Greenbelt Initiative the situation is different on the ground as the initiative is not fully operational due to inadequate funding. Financial challenge is the main contributing factor slowing progress of the project as evidenced by 2014/15 financial year where K2 billion was allocated for the initiative but only K400 million was paid out. Prospects for the rainy season in 2016 are uncertain because of the current El Nino, which is expected to cause wetter than average conditions in the north and drier than average conditions in the south. Currently there is fear of hunger in Malawi due to food shortages, a long drought and other effects of El Nino being experienced.

Malawi first female president Joyce Banda has paid tribute to heroine and first female cabinet minister, Rose Chibambo, saying she was her ‘role model’. [caption id="attachment_101373" align="alignright" width="255"]Banda with Rose Chibambo Banda with Rose Chibambo[/caption] Chibambo died this week in Blantyre and will be buried on Saturday. In a statement, Banda said she has learnt with “shock” the death of Chibambo. “As far as I am concerned she was a ‘Heroine’.  She was my ‘Role Model’ since I was very young,” said Banda. She stated: “Rose Chibambo was one of four women who were arrested, tried, sentenced and sent to prison in the 1960s.  Her crime was the fight against the minority White rule and colonialism. “In 2009, the late President Bingu wa Mutharika charged me with the responsibility of liaising with Mrs. Chibambo when he wanted to name a road in her honor in Mzuzu.  After the afternoon event at the road site, there was a celebration dinner at Mzuzu Hotel where I was present and spoke on behalf of our late President. “This event provided me with a rare opportunity to chat with her and learn more from her about her political life.   She told me that when she went to prison, she was breastfeeding.   Being a mother myself, It was difficult for me to comprehend how she could give up so much for our sake,” said Banda. Banda recalls that when the country got independence from Britain in 1964, Chibambo became the first Deputy Minister in Malawi. “ As my role model, I used to stand outside Parliament in Zomba just to watch Rose Chibambo enter Parliament,” she said. “A few months after her appointment and following the infamous 1964 cabinet crisis she and her husband had to leave Malawi to go and live in Zambia.  Unfortunately her children had to remain behind.  Most tragic was the death of her husband a few years later in Zambia,” recalls Banda. “I have lived to admire the courage of Mrs. Rose Chibambo.  Her faith, her capacity to love and her ability to forgive have inspired me.  She was a woman who sacrificed so much for Malawi’s freedom,” said Banda. The former president described Chibambo as  “extraordinary woman” and appealed to Malawians to also celebrate her life.

President Mutharika with the membership of the Blantyre CCAP Syond

President Peter Mutharika has asked churches in the country to impart upon their flock values of patriotism, integrity and respect for leaders as these create a steady platform for faith and spiritual advancement among members. [caption id="attachment_101377" align="alignright" width="600"]President Mutharika with the membership of the Blantyre CCAP Syond President Mutharika with the membership of the Blantyre CCAP Syond[/caption] [caption id="attachment_101376" align="alignright" width="600"]Blantyre CCAP Synod leadership Blantyre CCAP Synod leadership[/caption] He was speaking at Kamuzu Palace on Tuesday during an audience with newly-elected leadership of Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Blantyre Synod as well Management board. In his remarks, the Malawi leader tied the said values on the country’s socio-economic development. “The new leadership should continue nurturing the faith of their Christians. This is important because with faith everything is possible. "And faith is beyond Church. When people have faith in God, they have faith in themselves; they believe in themselves. They believe in their capabilities; and they work hard. They become people of integrity; and they become patriotic. This is what will make Malawi progress,” said President Mutharika who is a communicant member of the Blantyre Synod. The President called upon all Christians in the country to take their faith responsibilities seriously by letting their acts reflect on what the Bible says about leadership. “I cannot forget to reiterate that it is the duty of all faithful Christians to be obedient and loyal to the leadership, and remain united so that our leaders can better fulfil their responsibilities as the true servants of God. We must all play our part,” he said. He assured the Synod of his government’s total support in all areas where the two institutions work overlapping. “The church’s relationship with government is very vital in finding concrete solutions to the needs of our people regardless of their belief. Together, we provide our people with education, food, health, water and sanitation and empowerment services, among others. We are partners in development. And together, we will do more.” In his remarks Blantyre Synod General Secretary, Alex Benson Maulana, said the Synod commits to continue playing its prophetic role and advisory role to the Government of the day if given space. Maulana disclosed to President Mutharika the synod’s plans to establish a University and also a water bottling plant as a way of generating revenue for the church. During the interface with the President, the Synod introduced its Moderator and Vice Moderator, Reverends Robson Chimkwezule and Edna Navaya respectively and General Secretary, Alex Benson Maulana. The new office bearers of Blantyre Synod were elected during the 30th Synod Biennial Assembly which took place from August 24 -28, 2015.

One woman said care in the children's ward is below standard as children with kwashiokor and marasmus need special attention, special advice and special food. Hospital administrators refused to comment on the matter but reports say the hospital has few nurses working off hours because the government failed to pay them over time allowance called locum. Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe said the phasing out of the ward is part of a restructuring programme for the hospital, he did not elaborate. Hospital administrator Thom Chisale told Nyasa Bullets FC recently that the hospital critically need nurse and other medical personnel. Most government hospital have scaled down on operations due to severe cuts on their budgets as the government is facing huge cashflow problems.

Jappie Mhango : The Mzimba death is not hunger related

Minister of Information Jappie Mhango has swung swiftly to put down politically damaging reports that a man died of hunger in Mzimba last week. [caption id="attachment_96958" align="alignright" width="297"]Jappie Mhango : The Mzimba death is not hunger related Jappie Mhango : The Mzimba death is not hunger related[/caption] In a statement, Mhango said the reports were untrue because when the man's body was discovered on January, it was in severe decomposed state therefore medical personnel could not determine the cause of death. Mhango says the body of the man believed to be aged between 30 and 40 was so decomposed that it was buried on the site where people discovered it. The minister said the government believes the man was an asylum seeker who was dumped by his Malawian handlers and deserted by fellow asylum seekers when he was sick in fear that authorities would apprehend them as they were illegally in Malawi. Mhango echoed President Peter Mutharika's assertion that no Malawian would die of hunger in Malawi because there was enough maize in the country. However the situation on the ground shows ordinary Malawians are finding it hard to live as Admarc markets, which sell maize at K5500 are perpetually closed because of lack of maize whilst vendors are selling the stapple food at K9000 beyond the reach of most Malawians facing harsh economic conditions.

One of the Constituents making a point

Nsanje South West constituents pinned their Member of Parliament Dr Joseph Chidanti Malunga over alleged failure to involve local structures in the implementation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects. [caption id="attachment_101557" align="alignright" width="600"]One of the Constituents making a point One of the Constituents making a point[/caption] [caption id="attachment_89458" align="alignright" width="381"]DPP MP Chidanti Malunga: Taken to task DPP MP Chidanti Malunga: Taken to task[/caption] The concerned constituents voiced out their concern during an interface meeting with their elected duty bearers organized by Tiphedzane Community Support Organization where some threatened to hold demonstrations against their legislator accusing him of lacking transparency and accountability in the utilization of the CDF. The constituents said, since Chidanti was voted into power in 2014, he has sidelined the development structures within his constituency on the CDF projects which has negatively affected their completion. “Our Member of Parliament Dr Joseph Chidanti is lacking transparency and accountability in the implementation of projects under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). We are tired of what he is doing in our constituency. “He seems to have no vision. Just imagine, he is just starting projects without completing them. Since we voted him into power, no project with funding from CDF has been completed in the constituency,” said a visibly angry constituent. The concerned people have since demanded the transfer of CDF administration from the MP to development structures within the constituency for the sake of transparency and accountability claiming this can also help to speed up completion of the projects. “We are now demanding that the CDF should be administered by the local development structures for transparency and accountability. This move would help to plan for projects that can be completed in time,” said one of the constituents. Makoko Area Development Committee Chairperson Mike Kafalachi and some concerned individuals warned that if the MP is not respecting their demands, they will resort to holding demonstrations against him as they are tired of complaining on the issue in question. “We are now ready to hold demonstrations against him if he fails to respect our demands. We are tired of him and want things change for the better of the constituents not an individual,” warned Kafalachi. The legislator Dr Chidanti has however thrashed the claims and said all along he has been working with the relevant structures in the implementation of the CDF projects. “These stories are coming in because I am working with people of different political backgrounds. People should forget about politics and work together for the common good,” said Dr Chidanti. Tiphedzane Community Support Program Manager Paul Kamwendo said engaging constituents and elected duty bearers in interface meetings is imperative as it helps people to track developmental projects which the duty bearers outlined in their manifesto.

Major 1 Bushiri : I have worked hard for my billions, no cashgate

Billionaire Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has ruled out making major investments in Malawi saying there is fear of uncertainty. [caption id="attachment_95090" align="alignright" width="600"]Major 1 Bushiri : I have worked hard for my billions, no cashgate Major 1 Bushiri : I have worked hard for my billions, no cashgate[/caption] He could not directly say political or economic uncertainty but  pointed out that Malawi was simply not a right destination for his investments. "It has to do with the insurance of your property. We heard of how a hotel belonging to a man of God was attacked in Lilongwe, how a mob vandalised a church in Area 25 in Lilongwe after falsely accusing him of turning into a snake," he said in an interview with private station Zodiak on Friday. However, he could not say how much he is now worthy but conceded he has a string of investments in South Africa where he has mineral mines and wants to have what he described as the biggest privately owned university and a bank. Bushiri has a university in South Sudan, wells of oil and property in Dubai. The ‘Major 1’ as he is fondly called by his followers, Bushiri said he started off in a humble way, buying a gold mine at US$3000 and selling it off at US$2 million, buying more mines in Tanzania and South Africa and reselling them at huge profits, saying currently he remains with seven mines. Miracle money Asked about miracle money concept and philosophy, Bushiri said this is in the Bible as Jesus sent Peter to catch fish, telling him the first fish he caught had money in its mouth. He therefore said he will continue preaching about finances and investments to help uplift people's lives apart from the usual tradition preaching of salvation. The ‘Majoir 1’ however said it was sad some people peddle lies about him and his wealth saying this would never deter him from achieving his goal and mission in life. "Lies go faster than the truths. It is sad that lies have gone faster," he said, adding he works hard to earn his money. He said he is based in South Africa because the country is a one flight country, saying he can connect to another country without having to wait for long and the country is technologically advanced good for his investments. Bushiri has been in Malawi on charity, donating relief food to hundreds who face starvation. He has spend almost US$150,000 in his charity drive, receiving commendation from many of his critics, saying his actions have been “Godly”.

Who exactly was John Chilembwe?

Chilembwe

After the collapse of the MCP dictatorship in 1993, it seems Malawians embraced democracy with as much freedom of scholarly and intellectual analysis of our national history and its figures, as they did with all other aspects of freedom and human rights. [caption id="attachment_39553" align="alignright" width="176"]Chilembwe Chilembwe[/caption] The MCP dictatorship was not only an era of political darkness, but also an era of indoctrination where everyone was either conditioned or compelled in one way or another to accept history as it was provided with little or no questions at all, especially on politically sensitive history. This can be evidenced by the fact that the history of Dr Kamuzu Banda himself was not clear and only few questions were asked and only through cautious whispers. And it seems the history of John Chilembwe and the significance of his life and the 1915 insurgency was not told as it should have been. And Malawians did not have the freedom to look at this history, and analyze it especially with respect to, who Chilembwe really was given the facts surrounding his involvement in the colonial politics of his time. With the rise of press freedom since 1994, which promotes the freedom to share or publish even deviant opinions on all matters of national interest, I have read and heard a lot from people who have said a lot about who Chilembwe really was, which many did not share back then. For instance, some have called Chilembwe a mere rebel while others have called him a murderer, and similar labels which have robed him of his usual and generally accepted heroic and patriotic accolades. But what I find interesting the most until today, is what President of the United Independence Party, Hellen Singh who was also presidential candidate in the 2014 Elections told me in late November 2013. I had a chance of chatting with this brilliant lady at her office in Blantyre. During our chat, which lasted more than an hour, the longest I have ever had with a politician, we diverted to Chilembwe, after she had argued that Malawians celebrate the wrong heroes. Singh eloquently and intelligently – she is an intelligent and eloquent lady- narrated the story of Chilembwe to me, just brief enough to drive her point home, and said, “John Chilebwe was a Trade Unionist.” I had never thought about Chilembwe as a Trade Unionist, and I did not see that coming. Upon noticing that I needed a little more convincing on the matter, she said, “ JohnChilembwe was not a freedom fighter, he was a Trade Unionist because he was only fighting against poor wages of Nyasaland Africans working on the plantations of the White colonialists.” I knew she was talking about the infamous “Thangata.” “You don’t call such a person a freedom fighter.” She summarized while I inquisitively nodded my head.
