Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza.: Blame vendors

Ntcheu West MP Mwayi Kamuyambeni on Saturday morning appeared before Ntcheu police to answer questions on allegations that he was involved in the smuggling of 50 maize from an Admarc depot in the district. [caption id="attachment_100222" align="alignright" width="600"]Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza.: Blame vendors Minister of Agriculture Dr Allan Chiyembekeza: Blame vendors[/caption] Ntcheu police spokesperson Gift Matewere confirmed Kamuyambeni was summoned at the police station at 8 am on Saturday but refused to give details. Kamuyambeni said he was called at the police station but was vague on why the police called him. However district governor for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in Ntcheu Weston Kaphodza Ngozo said the police are investigating the legislator after two Admarc clerks at Ncheu Admarc depot mentioned him in a 50 bag maize deal. The police had earlier arrested the clerks when they failed to account for the bags of maize, which, Ngozo, alleged, they had sold to the member of parliament whom he said was pressing for 100 bags to distribute to hunger stricken victims in his constituency. Kamuyambeni was immediately released after the questioning. Nyasa Times has learnt that some women have resorted to sleeping at Admarc depots in anticipation that scarce staple maize would come and buy at the cheap price of K110 per kg as opposed to vendors who are selling the commodity at K900 per kg. People at Admarc are allowed to buy not more than 20 kg of maize per person per day. Minister of Agriculture Allan Chiyembekeza has blamed Admarc officials and vendors for the scarcity of maize in Admarc depots. Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture Felix Jumbe said the situation is dire and government needed to move swiftly to deal with lack of maize in Admarc depots.

Judge Dingiswayo Madise: Accused of having an interest in Kachali taking over PP

Former governing People’s Party (PP) members are dragging High Court judge Dingiswayo Madise into the party civil war for aiding the faction of former vice president Khumbo Kachali and having adverse interest in the party infighting. [caption id="attachment_99745" align="alignright" width="600"]Judge Dingiswayo Madise: Accused of having an interest in Kachali taking over PP Judge Dingiswayo Madise: Accused of having an interest in Kachali taking over PP[/caption] The PP hierarchy say Justice Madise should have recused himself in the matter when some party members obtained a court injunction to stop recent appointments of Uladi Mussa and Kamplepo Kalua because he reportedly persuaded PP founder Joyce Banda   to step aside and give the leadership to Kachali. Banda, currently outside Malawi, is said to have not taken the advice and appointed party’s vice president and parliamentary leader Uladi Mussa as an acting president and Rumphi East MP, Kamlepo Kalua as vice-president. This forced PP National organising secretary Salim Bagus to obtain an injunction through Judge Madise stopping Banda’s appointments. PP accuse   Kachale that after he  realised that the party has denied him the opportunity to stage “a coup “ to take over a party that he abandoned and disowned, he mobilized those that had been isolated by the mainstream party because they had been working with him. The faction hired lawyer Davie Lameck to represent them. PP links lawyer Lameck to Judge Madise that he  married a sister to Madise’s wife and that on the day they obtained an injunction , the wife of Lameck was seriously sick in Mzuzu hospital and Kachali  to told the hospital he would pay all the bills.  She died the following day. The publicity secretary of Ken Msonda  has accused officials who obtained the injunction to be  spoilers. But Bagus said “enough is enough” as the culture  of appointing members to party positions  seems to be defeating the spirit of elections through convention. Bagus echoed calls by other members calling for  a convention to resolve all the differences  . PP parliamentarian Ralph Jooma, who is vice-president (finance and administration)  said there is nothing illegal about the recent appointments of Mussa and Kalua. On calls to have the convention, PP secretary general Ibrahim Matola said the party will hold convention next year 2017 as scheduled in the constitution. He said all positions will be up for grabs from president to all executive members.

Chakwera and his MCP deputy Richard Msowoya who is also Speaker of Parliament, reveive wreaths to lay at Chibambo grave

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera has unreservedly and unconditionally apologised to all Malawians who were forced into exile during the party's 40 year autocratic grip to power. [caption id="attachment_101577" align="alignright" width="600"]Chakwera and his MCP deputy Richard Msowoya who is also Speaker of Parliament, reveive wreaths to lay at Chibambo grave Chakwera and his MCP deputy Richard Msowoya who is also Speaker of Parliament, reveive wreaths to lay at Chibambo grave[/caption] [caption id="attachment_101578" align="alignright" width="450"]Speaker Msowoya and Malewezi at the funeral Speaker Msowoya and Malewezi at the funeral[/caption] Chakwera said this during the funeral ceremony of Rose Chibambo, the country's heroine and historic figure who aggressively and fiercely fought the white rule and later Kamuzu Banda's dictatorial rule that forced her into exile for over 30 years as the MCP one party rule officials were baying for her blood. Chakwera was not on the official programme to speak at the burial ceremony but was slotted in to make the apology that those who went into exile waited for over 30 years although some of them received compensation from the government from 1994 at the dawn of multiparty democracy when the MCP was kicked out of power by the United Democratic Front (UDF). Vice president Saulos Chilima described Chibambo as a Malawi's rare breed. Other senior politicians who attended the burial ceremony include former vice presidents Khumbo Kachale and Justin Malewezi. Chibambo was buried in Mzuzu at Heroes Acre as recognition for her fierce and aggressive freedom fighting against the white rule and later Kamuzu Banda's autocratic rule. Vice president Chilima led the nation in paying last respects to the gallant freedom fighter, the first female cabinet minister in Kamuzu Banda's first cabinet meeting. State House has not explained why President Peter Mutharika has not attended the burial ceremony despite family members rescheduling the ceremony from Friday to Saturday to meet the head of state's busy schedule. The President also missed another historic event, the John Chilembwe Day commemorations at Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu. No reasons were given. He also missed a funeral of his relation in Ntcheu last week. Chibambo died aged 86 on Tuesday due to heart complications. She is known to everyone in Malawi as her beautiful young face is on K200 bank note. The ministry of information says the government accorded her military honours funeral ceremony, not the state funeral. The ministry says this is an honour which Chibambo deserves.

Seek Him for who He is and not what He can do

jesus bible

I have noticed that most people are not seeking a relationship with our heavenly father but instead desire to receive from Him. Yes, it is true that our God is a blessing God, but he desires that relationship with you. This is what is making most people end up following mere people instead of seeking our Heavenly Father. If you look in the Bible, the times that the children of Israel had gone away from God, the result was famine, diseases, and defeat at wars. On the opposite side, when they had repented and gone back to God, God always blessed them and they never lacked anything. If you look at most of the prayers that were prayed to repent their sins so that God could forgive them, you will notice that they never asked for anything to be provided to them. Look at Daniel’s prayer in chapter 9; Daniel included himself in his confession of wrongdoing. It was actually admitting that they had sinned, and seek God to forgive their sins, and get close to them again. Why has it become so had these days to just pray to God, and worship Him for Who He is without asking for anything. Of course the bible tells us to ask but this should not be our focus. Our focus should be to know and get close to God as the Bible tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto us. If we start looking for miracles more than seeking Him, then it is going to be very had and we may not even receive but we will eventually keep moving from one preacher to another as these preachers will look like a solution to your problems with their false prophesies about your life. I have read the bible from Genesis to Revelation but I have never seen where Jesus had to tell people even the positions of furniture in their houses. A prophecy should build those that are receiving it. What does furniture have to do with the Spiritual lives of children of God. If Jesus told the woman at the well that she had many men and even the man that she was living with was not hers, He was trying to correct the woman not just telling the woman things that will not build her up. People understand that these are the last days and so many preachers are out there but very few are saving the true God. That is why you see that there is an increase in prosperity messages than there is on helping people grow and build their relationship with God. Jesus said in Mathew 25:5 that many shall come in my Name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. There are many claiming to be doing the work of God, but very few are actually saving our true God. If you have the Spirit of God inside of you, it is so easy to know whether you are following a preacher sent by God all one of those preachers that trying to just weaken the body of Christ to an extent that people can no longer pray. Remember that the devil is also very busy at this time working to destroy the church. You will not see a devil coming to you with a laud voice that;”NOW I GOT YOU”. It is through the same people that we have trusted our lives with us pastors, bishops, papas, or whatever name you are calling them that the enemy is fighting at God’s children. Learn to seek God yourself for He has promised that He will answer the prayers of those that seek Him day and night. It does not exclude anybody; neither does it select certain people. The only condition is to seek Him with all your heart and not dwell much on what He is able to do.

Vice President Dr Chilima and his spouse Mary laying wreaths on the grave of Rose Chibambo-Pix By Joel Chirwa (Mana)

Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima was a centre of attraction on Saturday in Mzuzu when he spoke in fluent Tumbuka, a local dialect in most of the districts in the north, during the funeral service of political icon Rose Chibambo at Mzuzu heroes’ acre. The State Vice President described Chibambo as the very essence of compassion, of duty, of breaking political barriers and a symbol of selfless humanity by remaining true to her country despite the hardships she went through during the MCP rule. "On behalf of the President, I pay tribute to her level headedness and strength that despite the most bizarre life imaginable while in prison she remained to herself and to her country," said Chilima as people nodded in agreement. Turning to family members who were visibly heartbroken, Chilima said this was the time to be strong and remain calm and never ask or doubt the power of God. As a prayerful Vice President, Chilima told a story that when people question where God was when deaths occur, God's answer is: "I am at the same place I sat when John the Baptist my servant was beheaded. I am at the same where I sat when Stephen my servant was stoned to death. I am at the same place I sat when Paul my servant was murdered in Rome. I am at the same place I sat when my son Jesus Christ was humiliated, crucified and killed," he said. Chilima said this shows that God does not change and people need to accept that His ways are not our ways. Speaking earlier, MCP President Lazarus Chakwera, who was invited to speak but was not on the programme, had nothing to say but apologise for the atrocities of MCP and forcing many into exile including the late Chibambo. Uladi Mussa, who the synod recognised as PP President, said there was need to pass a law that would help to financially support those who politically served Malawi. Secretary General of Livingstonia Synod Reverend Levy Nyondo thanked government for according due respects to Chibambo and told VP Chilima to convey a message of appreciation to President Mutharika. "It is important to give credit where it is due. Please convey our appreciation to the President. You have done a lot and by delegating you here, the government has really dignified this funeral," said Nyondo. Conspicuously missing were cabinet ministers from the north apart from Goodall Gondwe. Jappie Mhango, Minister of Information, chose to travel to nearby Nkhatabay to address a political rally. Sports Minster Grace Chiumia was reportedly among the Mvano women at the funeral service.

Duwa and Tapiwa Mutharika: Mentioned in the probe

Investigations into suspected fraud transactions by former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika through a bank account he opened in Jersey, Europe is still underway as the  Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB)  says they waiting for key information from authorities in Jersey. [caption id="attachment_51376" align="alignright" width="600"]Duwa and Tapiwa Mutharika: Mentioned in the probe Duwa and Tapiwa Mutharika: Mentioned in the probe[/caption] In published report on Sunday, 17 January 2016,  the bureau said  may proceed with the investigations limited to Bingu’s children and spare President Peter Mutharika, allegedly being linked to the fraud probe, because he enjoys presidential immunity from any investigation and prosecution. Bingu’s children, son Madalitso, daughters Duwa and Tapiwa were fingured in the investigations. “The bureau is still waiting for the information so that it can proceed as appropriate. The bureau was looking for information on the bank [account] and property,” Nation on Sunday newspaper quoted  bureau’s spokesperson Egrita Ndala. The ACB, through Interpol, had asked Her Majesty of Jersey to help it investigate the suspected fraud relating to bank account number 58099848, Optimum account, held in the name of Bingu wa Mutharika and Duwa Kafoteka. Bingu had been under probe after his death and his wealth was also a subject of discussion in parliament. Opposition MPs wanted answers on  K61 billion wealth said to have been accumulated by late Mutharika with government claiming that the money was stolen from the public pulse. The accusations has since led to Mutharika’s former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) defending him saying the late President was capable of accumulating such wealth after working in international organisations including the UN for closer to 25 years.

Archbishop Thomas Msusa  has officially commenced the Jubilee of Mercy, a Catholic  holy year, calling those who pass through the newly-opened Holy Door to rediscover God’s mercy and experience the mystery of his love. During his homily, Archbishop Msusa emphasized the "simple, yet highly symbolic" act of opening the Holy Door, which "highlights the primacy of grace;" the same grace that made Mary, worthy of becoming the mother of Christ." "The fullness of grace can transform the human heart and enable it to do something so great as to change the course of human history," he said. The feast of the Immaculate Conception, he continued, serves as a reminder of the grandeur of God's love in allowing Mary to "avert the original sin present in every man and woman who comes into this world." "This is the love of God which precedes, anticipates and saves," he said. "Were sin the only thing that mattered, we would be the most desperate of creatures. But the promised triumph of Christ's love enfolds everything in the Father's mercy." The Year of Mercy, His Grace  stressed, is a gift of grace that allows Christians to experience the joy of encountering the transforming power of grace and rediscovering God's infinite mercy toward sinners. "How much wrong we do to God and his grace when we speak of sins being punished by his judgment before we speak of their being forgiven by his mercy," he said. "We have to put mercy before judgment, and in any event God's judgment will always be in the light of his mercy. In passing through the Holy Door, then, may we feel that we ourselves are part of this mystery of love." The feast of the Immaculate Conception has a special connection to the start of the Year of Mercy, he said, because "it reminds us that everything in our lives is a gift, everything is mercy." Like Mary, the  Archbishop continued, Christians are called to "become bearers of Christ" and to "let ourselves be embraced by the mercy of God who waits for us and forgives everything. Nothing is sweeter than his mercy. Let us allow ourselves to be caressed by God. The Lord is so good and he forgives everything." The Archbishop also said the Year of Mercy is an opportunity for all the "imprisoned" to sort out their cases. Head of the Catholic church, His Holiness Pope Francis opened his Jubilee of Mercy on Tuesday in St. Peter’s Basilica., saying that this year will be one in which Catholics are called to grow ever more convinced of God’s mercy, which should always come before judgment. “How much wrong we do to God and his grace when we speak of sins being punished by his judgment before we speak of their being forgiven by his mercy,” he said as he celebrated a Mass in St. Peter’s Square that marked the opening of the jubilee. “We have to put mercy before judgment,” he added. The Jubilee of Mercy begins on the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and will close on Nov. 20, the Solemnity of Christ the King.

Malawi experiencing unstable government

President Peter Mutharika with foreign minister George Chaponda

President Peter Mutharika’s government has been in power for 20 months and yet it still appears to have not found its feet. The economy is in tatters and life for the majority of Malawians is unbearable. If the government is yet to find its feet, then it goes without saying that it is an uphill battle for it to find solutions to problems that Malawians are facing. [caption id="attachment_99687" align="alignright" width="600"]President Peter Mutharika with foreign minister George Chaponda President Peter Mutharika with foreign minister George Chaponda[/caption] Imagine, the government assures people that it has enough maize in Admarc markets and yet people have to go through a lot of difficulties to access it. The best way to describe this maize is that it is available in the unavailable form. Malawians have to endure and be whipped into line for as long as four days before buying 10 kilogrammes of the maize. The main problem of the DPP-led government is undecisiveness, which in turn makes governance to be unstable. It is time that government must prove that it knows what it is doing and should stand by its decisions. It is unfortunate now that government decisions cannot be taken wholesale because they are bound to change any moment and put everyone out of step. At the moment, there is a lot of talk about government reforms which are expected to improve the economic situation of the country. Among other measures, reforms are there to tighten government expenditure. Surprisingly, the same government which is trying to control expenditure is reported in the media to have dubiously contracted some UK-based agency to carry out a PR project to sale Malawi abroad at a cost of K295 million. If the country has to spend such an enormous amount to sell its image, then what are Malawi’s foreign missions for? Are such decisions to spend extravagantly made at Cabinet or personal level? In fact, Malawi is not a new State that no one knows about. For it to attract tourists and investors, it must improve its facilities, which include roads and hotels in that way the country will sell itself. This is not space science that the government can fail to understand. With all due respect, the Mutharika government seems not to know what the national priorities are. It does not make much sense in painting a picture that the country is ready for investors when the situation on the ground is far from it. Some investors might be promised land which is a scarce resource and a sensitive issue in Malawi. If government will grab land for the sake of investors, it can be rest assured of endless conflicts with the locals. When the President came into power there was a lot of tough-talking within his government that even without donor budgetary support, the government can manage with resources within the country. Most people might have thought that the government had found a formula to prove that the 40 percent donor budgetary support was not really necessary. Then it came as a real surprise when it was reported in the media that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Chaponda, was pleading with donor representatives in the country to release budgetary support. Honestly, this portrays a weakness in the government of Malawi because it fails to stick to its decision. After all, the tough-talking was not necessary since before long the government has crawled back to its dishonourable position and start pleading for help. It is such unstable mindset which can force even the most trusted government supporters to say that though they like how the DPP-led government leads, but they do not know where it is leading Malawians to. If President Mutharika and his government continue to be undecisive on important national issues, it might even lose out on important investment deals. This is not the time for striking deals first and looking at the formalities later.

Vincent Ghambi: Those who smuggle maize are evil

Government has warned severe action against those involved in Admarc maize smuggling that has negatively affected the sale of the staple food in state controlled grain markets. [caption id="attachment_70426" align="alignright" width="600"]Vincent Ghambi: Those who smuggle maize are evil Vincent Ghambi: Those who smuggle maize are evil[/caption] Minister of Information Jappie Mhango said this at a rally after finishing donating K5 million worth of maize and beans in the north courtesy of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). "We are aware that there are unscrupulous traders who are conniving with Admarc officials to smuggle the maize out of Admarc depots. We will deal with them," said Mhango. Deputy minister of Education Vincent Ghambi described those who smuggle the maize as evil as they are forcing Admarc depots run out of grain as soon as it arrives forcing poor ordinary Malawians go without food as they cannot afford the K9000 per 50kg bag from vendors whereas Admarc sells at K5500 per 50kg bag. He said local leaders should ensure Admarc officials are not selling maize at night. As the two cabinet ministers were telling people this, police in Ncheu were questioning a Democratic Progressive Party member of parliament for Ntcheu West Mwayi Kamuyambeni on the very same issue. He is said to have obtained 50 bags of maize out of the 100 he had asked for allegedly to donate to hunger stricken people in his constituency. The MP was questioned for four hours before the police gave him bail. Ntcheu district commissioner Harry Phiri denied he had given the legislator a go ahead to take the maize, saying he had advised him to seek permission from Admarc management. The police have since recovered all the bags of maize.

Thyolo council officials in K5mil cashgate accusations: Ghost workers

msb cashgate

Officials from Thyolo district council have been accused of putting ghost workers on a public works programme that has drained government coffers up to K5 million. Council chairman John Orima confirmed there is a financial report that is detailing how council officials, councillors and some traditional leaders swindled the government of K5 million. He said the council will meet soon to chart the way forward on the allegations, dubbed Thyolo mini cashgate. The report says only 1638 people worked for the public works programme in 2015 but the officials put the figure of those who worked at 2691, making the government lose up to K5 million. The people were involved in aforestation projects among other projects in the hilly tea growing district. People get K600 per day when they work in the government funded public works programme. In Karonga, elected leaders have accused council officials of implementing development projects in secrecy. They have told the officials that democracy and decentralisation demand openness in such issues. District commissioner has since apologised to councillors and members of parliament for some projects which took off without the knowledge of the elected leaders. In Dowa, some traditional leaders have accused council officials of selling off without the knowledge of chiefs. The land in question is a market at Dowa Turn off. However, the district commissioner has feigned ignorance on the matter.

CCAP Livingstonia Synod general secretary Levi Nyondo has threatened the church would exhume the body of heroine and historic figure Rose Chibambo if government does not build her a mausoleum within a year. Nyondo said this during the burial ceremony of Chibambo at a new Heroes Acre in Mzuzu. He said the church was giving the government an ultimatum of one year from January 16, 2016 to maintain the place and construct her mausoleum or the church would exhume her body and rebury it at the church's grave yard. Nyondo said the new Heroes Acre was deserted and needed to be worked on to show that it was a Heroes Acre. Vice president Saulos Chilima who represented President Peter Mutharika at the funeral ceremony did not comment on the ultimatum. However, Jappie Mhango, minister of Information said in an interview the government does not recognise the new Heroes Acre which is behind Admarc offices in Mzuzu. He said the government recognises only one Heroes Acre in Mzuzu where Chakufwa Chihana, another fierce and aggressive freedom fighter credited for multiparty democracy in Malawi, was buried. Mhango said he has no knowledge that the government recently approved a new site as Heroes Acre. There is also a state Heroes Acre in Lilongwe where the first head of state Kamuzu Banda was buried, just a stone's throw from parliament building. Chibambo, who was born in 1928, was in the first cabinet of Kamuzu Banda. She was also the first woman to sit on Nyasaland African Congress executive committee. Her picture is on Malawi's K200 bank note.

Should Malawi really be celebrating a coal plant?

On December 3rd, 2015, I woke up to this feature article headline " Malawi in Coal Fired Power Plant MOU with China Group: To Boost Economy". The article quoted Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Goodall Gondwe, stating that the objective of the current government is to ensure that Malawi would no longer be called poor by the time they leave office. I must confess I like the enthusiasm demonstrated in this statement. [caption id="attachment_93967" align="alignright" width="600"]Marching protestors heading to coal mine- Photo by Tiwonge Kumwenda, Nyasa Times Marching protestors heading to coal mine- Photo by Tiwonge Kumwenda, Nyasa Times[/caption] However, despite all the bells and whistles that accompanied the signing of the agreement, it still looked to me like a host of complexities covered up in a few niceties. Stay with me, I will explain why. At first glance one would immediately think, of course, why did we not think of this earlier. These people are geniuses. This is it, a panacea to our endless energy woes. Imagine, no more blackout nightmares, no more inadequate energy generation that negatively impacts on direct foreign investment, on top of that, Malawi's dream of predominantly becoming a production based economy would no longer be a far fetched reality. Exciting news indeed, isn't it? Hold on a second, we are talking about burning coal right? Have we considered all the long-term effects of burning coal on the people living in the area earmarked for the plant? What about the surrounding environment? Have we considered the air, rivers and ground water? Where would villagers collect portable water from, if these sources get contaminated? Is this really worth it? In medicine, a patient is recommended to take prescribed medication if its therapeutic effect outweighs the adverse effects. My point is, does the benefit of burning coal in Kam'mwamba outweighs its negative effects on the inhabitants and their surrounding environment?  Mwatisitikuwombela Mfit iMmanja pamanepa? Are we not celebrating an investment in a future public health disaster? This comes on the heels of renewed calls for countries notorious for greenhouse gas emissions, such as China and the United States of America to systematically reduce their emissions. United States is working at investing into alternative renewable energy initiatives and shutting down most of its coal power plants.  China has committed to follow suit. In fact, just recently, China signed a climate-change agreement with the United States. According to the agreement, the two countries, who are also the world’s two largest greenhouse gas emitters promised to cap carbon pollution in 15 to 20 years. What this means is that China agreed to halt the growth of its carbon emissions by around 2030. If it meets that commitment, the country’s CO2 pollution will probably plateau at around 11 billion metric tons. Conversely, United States agreed to emit between 26 percent and 28 percent less CO2 by 2025 than it did in 2005, when it produced 7.1 billion metric tons of carbon. This is major development and great news to the environment. It is estimated that in 2010 alone china contributed over 22% of global green house emissions seconded by the U.S. at 15% whilst Malawi contributed zero percent. This is a great development for our country. It probably means Malawi has not done damage or polluted its environment yet. The aforementioned percentages did not come without a cost to U.S. and China. These countries have paid and continue to pay dearly for using energy generated from coal over the years. With all financial resources at their disposal they are still struggling to contain the adverse effects resulting from coal burning. Coal has negative impacts on public health. Clean air.org demystifies it this way. "Burning coal is a major source of fine particulate, acid rain, air toxics and greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Links have been made between exposure to pollution from coal-burning power plants and serious health impacts such as heart disease, respiratory diseases and different types of cancers. Not only that, burning coal also contaminates drinking water with mercury and other metals". Does Malawi have a plan for how it’s going to dispose of hazardous coal combustion waste? If yes, can this administration articulate what it is to array our fears? The simple reasoning behind this argument is, if hazardous coal combustion waste is disposed of in unlined pits, dangerous chemicals like arsenic can leach into drinking water supplies causing catastrophic public health problems. Malawi has enough issues right now. Creating more issues is not in the interest of any upright thinking and patriotic Malawian. The country is in dire straits; nothing seems to be going right. People are looking for answers. Its apparent, pressure to demonstrate that the leadership is not on autopilot is palpable. However, you do not create a potentially hazardous and probably uncontainable problem to be seen as resolving the prevailing ones. This is pure madness. When one has a chronic condition and is desperate for cure, the temptation to fall for anything that promises relief, even if it means for a short period overlooking its long-term effects is really high. Malawi is at that point. The economy is profusely bleeding. Constituents are running out of patience. However, we still need you folks in public offices to keep your sanity and exercise extreme caution when coming up with solutions to pull the country out of this quagmire for the sake of our children and their children's children. As a country we need to understand why China has eventually become party to the climate-change agreement. In addition to being responsive to Global warming, China has been suffocating its own people. Today Beijing is nicknamed the masked city because if its citizens do not wear masks with filters it is almost impossible to breath. We are currently struggling to supply drugs to hospitals. We are grounding hospital emergency services and rationing food for patients. Can we afford to purchase masks for the entire Kam'mwamba or Neno population? I am not implying that Kam'mwamba will become Beijing immediately. We may not be able to live to see it but our children and their children likely will. Our Chinese counterparts are playing a double standard. Initiating and promoting green house gas emissions in Malawi, while reducing the same in their country? According to Scientific American, China's National Development and Reform Commission has laid out a plan to cope with climate change through the end of the decade. They are building more nuclear power plants, wind farms, hydroelectric dams and even to start employing more solar power, of which, the country installed 12 gigawatts worth in 2013. In fact, in 2013, more new clean energy sources were added to the grid in China than fossil fuel-fired power for the first time ever. China has added several hundred gigawatts worth of such clean energy, the Three Gorges Dam alone pumps out 22 gigawatts and also hopes to add as much as 1,000 gigawatts of these low-carbon emitting sources by 2030. I find this deceptive. They are not investing in coal burning power plants anymore. What is their explanation for not doing so? If China is serious about assisting struggling countries such as Malawi in boosting their energy production for economic growth and development, wouldn't it be intelligent to invest in energy infrastructure that would not be hazardous to the people and environment? Alternative energy such as wind and solar will do just exactly that. I seriously think President Peter Muthalika administration should take another look at this. Let us tread carefully.

"I would like to announce my resignation from the Peoples Party in order to concentrate on my personal businesses," said Ngalande. Ngalande, who lost in parliamentary race to United Democratic Front (UDF) member Lucius Banda, said he has no any grudges against any member of the PP. "I would like to inform you that I have resigned from the Peoples Party both as a member and as Deputy Director of Social Services with immediate effect," reads Ngalande’s resignation letter to PP secretary general. "I sincerely thank the former President Dr Joyce Banda and the entire leadership of the Peoples Party for the support rendered to me during the period that I was a member of the party holding such a big position,” he added. He states that PP has groomed a leader in him “who will still contribute to the growth of the Malawi nation in whatever capacity I decide to focus on." Ngalande said he will continue to seek to oust Lucius Banda for the parliamentary seat come 2019 elections. PP spokesman Ken Msonda said the party is not surprised with the resignation of Ngalande, saying he has formalised it but left the party August 2014 and already started attending political rallies of the DPP. DPP President Peter Mutharika is expected to welcome Ngalande on Monday in Balaka. Mutharika will on Monday (18 January, 2016) officially  commission Balaka Cotton Ginnery. Bishop Stima

Mangochi Catholic Diocese Bishop  Montfort Stima has hailed the multi-million Millennium Challenge Account Malawi supported environmental management project being implemented in the district, saying it would go a long way in mitigating the global problem of climate change. [caption id="attachment_101634" align="alignright" width="326"]Bruno Banda, Diocesan Secretary for Mangochi Bruno Banda, Diocesan Secretary for Mangochi[/caption] [caption id="attachment_58089" align="alignright" width="300"]Bishop Stima Bishop Stima[/caption] Stima was speaking on Saturday when the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace briefed him on the activities under the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) environmental management project being carried out in Mangochi. “The timely grant was made to fill the gap created in trying to respond to a global problem of climate change which has grave implications on our environmental, social, economic, and political status,” Stima said. Stima observed that environmental problems which manifest through sedimentation and severe erosion in Shire River Basin and its catchment area is a phenomenon which affects the performance of electricity generation. “You'll agree with me that unsustainable agricultural practices and land management activities are some of the factors that are resulting in Malawi currently grappling with intermittent power supply. “Economically, this is the critical time when we need energy for our economy to thrive to run the industries when there are overt signs of donor fatigue, national budget implemented with no or minimal external financial support due to the infamous cash gate among other reasons,” he added. He noted:“Inflation rate is skyrocketing hence prices of goods and services are increasingly going up.” The prelate pointed out that deforestation for agricultural purposes remains the biggest cause of global warming which affects the availability of essential resources such as drinking water, energy and agricultural production. “It is disheartening that wanton cutting down of trees has left our once beautiful Malawi bare and polluted. Were in January 2016, yet some parts of the country farmers have not yet planted their crops due to the dry spell influenced by El Nino,” Stima emphasised. Stima lamented that most Malawian farmers whose livelihoods depend on natural reserves and eco-systematic services such as agriculture, fishing and forestry have no alternative financial activities and resources to adapt to climate change. He, therefore, echoed the Holy Fathers call that human beings were being called to be instruments of God by making the Earth what the creator intended it to be and correspond with God's plan for peace. The head of the Catholic Church in Mangochi also appealed to beneficiary communities in the area of T/As Chowe to own and sustainably utilise the environment, noting: ultimately the initiative benefits a larger community and making the earth a better place to live in. On this note, Stima assured that the resources provided by MCA for the project would be utilised for the intended purpose following stringent principles of transparency and accountability. Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Mangochi Diocesan Secretary, Bruno Banda said the commission received K190 million alongside other non-governmental organisations to implement an environmental and natural resources management, social and gender enhancement project. According to Banda, CCJP which was mandated to carry out its activities in T/A Chowe's area has already trained communities in joint family budgeting, lobbied with men and local leaders to involve women in decision making processes, besides establishing village natural resource management committees. “The next thing on the agenda is distribution of livestock and establishment of adult literacy classes to empower participating communities with information to better manage the environment,” said Banda. The three year project spans from August 2015 to July 2018.--Mana

Rosebury Satha Sambo, chairperson of Tourim Council of Malawi described the Fast Jet closure of shop in Malawi as the dark day for Malawi tourism. "They were the cheapest. Most people who never dreamt of boarding a plane had a chance," said Sambo. She also said this was a big blow to small and medium business people who used to spend three days in a bus from Malawi to Tanzania but now used to fly for two to three hours. Fast Jet made their fares extremely low at K40, 000 though people had to pay for all their luggage and buy drinks and food on board the plane.

Chakufwa Tom Chihana is a name that is associated with multiparty politics of Malawi

Remains of modern day fierce and aggressive freedom fighter Chakufwa Tom Chihana is likely to be exhumed from where it is buried and be reburied close to Rose Chibambo's grave which is designated as heroes acre. [caption id="attachment_84078" align="alignright" width="600"]Chihana's abandoned grave in Mzuzu Chihana's abandoned grave in Mzuzu[/caption] [caption id="attachment_84077" align="alignright" width="320"]Chakufwa Tom Chihana is a name that is associated with multiparty politics of Malawi Chakufwa Tom Chihana is a name that is associated with multiparty politics of Malawi[/caption] Mzuzu City Council officials have confided with Nyasa Times that Chihana will be reburied at the new heroes acre. Chihana’s tiny grave in the city of Mzuzu behind Reserve Bank of Malawi remains a desolate, abandoned site despite earlier government promises to erect a mausoleum befitting the fallen trade union, human rights activist and served as the country’s second vice-president. The grave has a faded Chihana portrait hanging under a falling roof, marked with untrimmed flowers, overgrown grass, and heavy dust settling on the unguarded grave, conjuring an eerie image, especially at night. An official from the council who asked not to be named because the council has not yet consulted family members of late Chihana, a trade unionist turned politician, said the land where Chihana is buried is grossly encroached and can no longer bury another hero. "Apart of the land has been sold to an Indian, the rest is encroached disqualifying it to be a heroes acre. “ He said the land where Chibambo was buried was identified just a few days before her burial on Saturday and government officials agreed that it should be the heroes acre for the north Malawi. Livingstonia Synod general secretary Reverend Levi Nyondo gave the government an ultimatum of one year to develop fully the new heroes acre, saying heroes cannot be resting at a bushy abandoned looking place. Former president Bakili Muluzi in 2014 donated K1 million (about $2 000) towards the upgrading of the grave site of Chihana. The late Chihana, is also among 37 individuals and organisations from 24 countries that were awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award since 1984. He got his award in 1992. On 6 April 1992, Chakufwa Tom Chihana walked into the den of lions when he landed at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) and openly did the unthinkable. He challenged the entrenched Kamuzu Banda’s 31-year-old autocratic rule under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Effectively, he put into motion, with others, a movement that saw the feared MCP regime crumble; hence entered into the annals of history as one of the founding fathers of Malawi’s multipartyism. Chihana died in June 2006. This will be the second time that government will have a state funded reburial activity after mid 1990s when Aaron Gadama, Dick Matenje, Twaibu Sangala and Mr Chiwanga bodies were exhumed and reburied after the then president Bakili Muluzi ordered a decent burial for the three former senior cabinet ministers and a member of parliament.

Jappie Mhango

Information minister Jappie Mhango has told district health officers to change their mindset and be innovative by growing maize to feed patients. [caption id="attachment_96958" align="alignright" width="297"]Jappie Mhango Jappie Mhango: Be innovative[/caption] Mhango said this in Chitipa when he donated 100 bags of maize and 10 bags of beans at the district hospital donated by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Mhango said it is high time hospitals acquired land where they can cultivate land to grow maize and other crops that can feed patients. "Always be innovative, you cannot go on suffering, failing to feed patients waiting for assistance from donors and government," said Mhango who is also government spokesman. Officials at the hospital said patients get a meal a day instead of the normal three meals due to lack of funds. District Hospital Officer Moffat Kambalame thanked the DPP for the donation, saying it would alleviate problems faced by the hospital due to lack of money. Kambalame said the financial situation has worsened due to the pulling out of a Norwegian NGO, Norad, which he said assisted the hospital with food and fuel for ambulances. Ministry of Health officials are yet to comment on Mhango's suggestion that has surprised many.

The two facilities will be benefit over 350,000 people in area, according to Traditional Authority (T/A) Mthiramanja. Ambassador Qingyang urged the communities to be industrious, observing no country can achieve sustainable economic growth without diversifying trade with small businesses. "You may wish to know that China is doing well because of the hard-working spirit of its people. People in China are very industrious and they don't just wait for government's interventions to uplift their welfare. "Small scale businesses play a pivotal role to emerging economies and Malawi require more small scale businesses to advance its economy," said Ambassador Qingyang. He therefore said his government is committed to supporting such initiative, apart providing the nation with funds for various development projects. In his remarks, Chaponda described the Chinese Ambassador Qingyang as Malawi's true friend. He also hailed the People's Republic of China's support in transforming the country's socioeconomic landscape. The Foreign Affairs Minister further said since the establishment of the relationship in 2007, China has become Malawi's true friend and has assisted in financing, infrastructure development; capacity building and disaster relief and risk management, among others. "I am also very certain that China will assist us in terms of food security. At the moment, dry spells have damaged our crops and this will certainly to lead to food challenges. "We require Chinese government's support in our interventions and efforts to support the rural masses," said Chaponda. He added, "His Excellency Qingyand is not just an Ambassador, but also a good friend. He could have easily delegated and asked officials from his office to come, but he has traveled to be part of this ceremony and appreciate challenge being faced here. "They have transformed the landscape of Malawi and they will certainly continue doing good work for the betterment of Malawians."

Nankhumwa receiving the iron sheets

A Malawian owned company Super Sakuwa Steel Limited has donated 1,620 iron sheets worth K7, 387 200  to 54 churches and mosques that were  affected by torrential rains and winds in Mulanje Central Constituency. [caption id="attachment_101661" align="alignright" width="600"]Nankhumwa receiving the iron sheets Nankhumwa receiving the iron sheets[/caption] [caption id="attachment_101662" align="alignright" width="317"]Nankhumwa: Grateful to Super Sakuwa Nankhumwa: Grateful to Super Sakuwa[/caption] The 12 feet iron sheets were presented in Lilongwe on Thursday to the constituency's Member of Parliament who also Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa. Super Sakuwa Steel Limited Sales Executive Innocent Chithonje said: "At our company, we look at the customers as the most important visitor on our premises, they are not dependent on us  but we are dependent on them. These are the people who are the purpose of our survival, they are part of the company's family and they deserve the same treatment we desire hence this donation after their MP has had asked us on their behalf.” He added that their gesture of donating the iron sheets to the religious groupings was reached after noticing that government through the department of the natural disasters normally assist the affected people at household level. "We know that government alone cannot manage to assist everyone at all levels but we need to come in to supplement where government cannot manage to assist," he said. On his remarks, Nankhumwa said that he thought it wise to reach out to some well wishers to come in and assist the religious groups which were affected by the rains after noticing that government is assisting people at the household level at the meantime. "If you read the book of Haggai from verses 1-6 in the Bible you will find that God rebuked people of Israel living in comfort houses but there were no good temples, that's why God sent Haggai to lead them in building the Temple. "Again in the book of  Mathew, we read that the Lord said seek me first and whatever you want shall be given. So, you cannot seek God in a desolate place that's why I thought Wa cannot leave the home of the Lord desolate.
